Grasshopper Lesson

Our nature adventure today was a blast even though it was HOOOOOOT!!! I wish this Tennessee weather would start to cool off! We had a wonderful group today for our adventure into learning more about the group of orthoptera insects – grasshopper, locust, katydid, and cricket! Here are my lesson notes if you want to extend the learning at home!

* Gathering Song
*Free play at the creek / catch some grasshoppers!
*Introduction to the species – this is a great article where I found all the information I wanted to share with the kids! I love the fun way this website presents the scientific information!
*Step by step drawing (during the drawing we observe the insect and learn more about it from the information I referenced above. Things like antennae, legs, body parts, etc.)

*SNACK! I had the kids repeat this rhyme “Red, orange, or yellow, forego that fine fellow. Black, green, or brown, go ahead and toss him down!” I brought packs of seasoned edible crickets!!! I was so surprised at what a hit they were! I’m proud of my little nature adventurers!!! (On Amazon)
*Food chain game (link here) The kids enjoyed the game of tag/relay as the grasshoppers went out and tried to eat all the grass/wheat! We talked about how the shrew eats the grasshoppers and the hawk eats the shrews! This type of game is a perfect example to how child passions can lead to wonderful learning in a child’s nature study! (Read more about child passions in the book Coyote’s Guide to Connecting with Nature!)
* Thanksgiving Song (The highlight of the day was hearing the sweet little boy say “I’m thankful for sticks so caterpillars can make their cocoons!”)

I am looking forward to next month! I think our theme will be spiders/webs!
