Full Moon Hike

Our upcoming Nature Adventure will be about the night sky. We are taking a trip to the Dyer Observatory to learn more about our solar system so I wanted to include the topic of space in our nature study.

When I was putting together the resources for our upcoming class I found that this month was the last month for a super moon in 2022! I quickly put together an event for our Wild + Free group to hike together on the night of the full moon! This was an amazing experience and will not be the last!

We gathered at the bottom of the hill for some quick rules and expectations. The students did a wonderful job staying together in groups as we hiked up to the top of the hill. We also learned a little about what makes a moon a “super moon!”

Here are some great resources:

Some of us brought telescopes and binoculars to get a good look at the surface of the moon! Looking at the night sky brings a sense of awe and wonder at how big our universe is and even how much of it we don’t understand!

I love this picture of our group on top of the hill! It looks like daylight but that bright light is the moon! We all had such a great time exploring with our flashlights on this special night!

This experience will stay with our children forever! It was kind of like camping without having to do the work of setting up a tent! LOL! Next time we will plan a hike during a new moon so we can enjoy looking at constellations on a clear night! I’m looking forward to our continued study of astronomy through experiences and living books! Here’s one of my favorites:

If you would like to host a night hike for your homeschool group here are some quick tips!

  • Set the date 2 weeks in advance
  • Give everyone clear directions at a meeting spot and time
  • Have everyone bring flashlights and each parent bring any important first aid/medicine
  • Encourage storytelling and child play at your hiking destination
  • Begin and end your gathering with a fun song! Here is a link to what I use at all my gatherings!
